December 13th, 2011 - VEGAS! The Show Featured in Strip Las Vegas Magazine

Strip Las Vegas

By Jack Wellington

Strip Las Vegas Magazine

Whether you're a local or visiting Las Vegas for the first or fiftieth time-if you love singing and dancing-you'll love Vegas! The Show. Unlike other Vegas shows, this performance gives you the back history of how a tiny town smack in the middle of the desert came to be the mecca of the service and entertainment industry. Vegas! The Show lives up to its name, starting with the Neon Graveyard and moving forward decade after decade, through musical storytelling, humorous skits and a fabulous live 12-piece orchestra that kicks your ass with its brass section).

Theater goers can get their own history lesson on everything entertainment here in Vegas - starting from the swinging Lounge Act to the Blues, from the Rat Pack to the Burlesque Showgirls, through Elvis, Wane Newton, Tom Jones, up through specialty acts that are showcased and inserted between the melodies: like the magic of Joseph Gabriel, a fabulous duo of identical twin tap dancers Sean and John Scott, and the wonderful Sandou Trio - a gymnastics-mixed aerial trio that takes your breath away every time they throw their female teammate in the air. Yet the heavy applause went out to a few of the leads like Eric Jordan Young who brings us through this musical Vegas journey, from start to finish, with his strong vocals and charismatic presence. Also the three female beauties, including Trina Johnson-Finn and Joelle Righetti-Jenson, led by Broadway's own Reva Rice, belt out several crowd-pleasing numbers. The Vegas vixen Lead Dancer Tara Palsha, a redhead with legs that won't quit, lit up the stage like a firecracker. This dancer's versatility and flexibility made our jaws drop. Her body transformed into written musical notes - legato legs and staccato snaps of her head, commanding the stage like that of a feline cat on the prowl, slinking from stage left to stage right.

To create an impressive show, a crew of strong, talented leaders were brought in to handle the detailed history of Vegas, starting with Pat Caddick as Musical Director, Jerry Lopez as Band Leader, and Tiger Martina to handle all of the Choreography. The audio and lighting production sets a glittering backdrop to the different sounds and choreography of many decades (literally generations) of Vegas' history, and Martina's direction takes a bow at every genre-even Sonny and Cher performing "I've got you Babe".

Vegas! The Show is held at the Saxe Theatre inside Planet Hollywood's Miracle Mile Shops. To get to the theatre, it's a hike up a couples levels of stairs (there's also an elevator), but well worth it, even if you're in stripper-heels, since the theater has a deep incline with no obstructions for "not a bad seat in the house". Showtimes are 7pm and 9pm nightly. For Tickets call 702-260-7200 or visit VegasTheShow.com SLV

“Vegas! The Show” takes audiences on a nostalgic journey back to the days when the Rat Pack, Sonny & Cher, Elvis, Tom Jones and even a young up-and-comer named Wayne Newton graced the city’s many stages. Featuring a cast comprised of some of the Strip’s most phenomenal performers, “Vegas! The Show” has something for everyone: singing, dancing… even a Liberace marionette puppet! It’s the very definition of must-see entertainment and a worthy successor to the many legendary acts to which it pays homage.

With New York legalizing same-sex marriages, Vegas! The Show wanted to show its support for Gay rights, and hopes others will also support the movement.

"The New York State Senate vote was a huge milestone, affording gay and lesbian couples the rights, dignity and respect that come with marriage. No matter how you look at it, this is a 'human' rights victory and it deserves to be commemorated." says theatre owner David Saxe.

VEGAS! The Show: This One Deserves The Exclamation!

Think about it: How many times have you seen the title of a show or a movie with an exclamation point on the end? There's Oklahoma! Airplane! ¡Three Amigos! Mamma Mia! Hot Shots! Oliver!....and those are only a few. Some of them actually, depending upon your response, may have deserved the exclamation. Most, however, do not. An exception to this general truism is Vegas! April 1, 2011 - Vegas! The Show: History in Song and Dance

Posted by Sheri Leblanc | reflectionsinverse.blogspot.com

Last month, I was in California and decided to take a few day vacation in Las Vegas. One of the most enjoyable shows there is Vegas! The Show - A history of the city in song and dance at the Saxe Theater, Planet Hollywood.

The opening set simulates the Neon Bone yard of Las Vegas. It is here our narrator; host Ernie makes the history of Las Vegas come to life before our eyes. Vegas the Show is not impersonations, but rather an energetic telling of the history of Las Vegas performance. It highlights many of the scenes and styles that automatically come to mind as one thinks of the Las Vegas Strip. In the show the performers are all excellent at what they do. The singing and the dancing are great and the presentation is much more enjoyable than the attempts in other shows to impersonate. The audience can enjoy the abilities of the performers and be carried back to the history without the concern of how accurately the performers present the original star. The live music adds to the authentic nature of the production.

November 14, 2010 - Two tales tell how Vegas used to be

Las Vegas Review-Journal

Monday marks the 60th anniversary of the Kefauver hearings that took place in a courtroom that's now part of the Mob Museum.

What was intended to be a tough message for Las Vegas to clean up its act had a far different result: Thanks to the national exposure from the hearings, the entertainment capital of the world had an outlaw aura to boot.

Some historians say the nation's fascination with the mobtown image helped Las Vegas more than it hurt.

U.S. Sen. Estes Kefauver, D-Tenn., and his traveling show, the Senate Special Committee to Investigate Organized Crime in Interstate Commerce, met Nov. 15, 1950, in the federal courthouse and post office.

The plan was to haul in local organized crime figures and put 'em on the hot seat.

Las Vegas was the seventh stop on Kefauver's 14-city crimefighter tour that set TV ratings through the roof.

Six months earlier, the Desert Inn opened, and Kefauver wanted to talk to frontman Wilbur Clark and former Cleveland mobster Moe Dalitz, who controlled the D.I.

It was more show than substance. According to one report, the committee took a break after just two hours of interviews to visit Hoover Dam.

After a few more interviews, a news conference was called, and that was it for the hearing.

GIMME THAT OLD TIME VEGAS

In front of a necropolis where Vegas marquees and hotel signs of old are the tombstones, an old, black janitor (the multi-talented Tezz Yancey) comes out with a broom and reminisces with us about the Vegas of old. It doesn’t take an idiot savant to know what cards the creators of Vegas! The Show are holding: you know that the set will burst into more blinking lights than a hillside of fireflies in mating season; you know that Mr. Yancey’s make-up and presentational interpretation of old age will fly off faster than a bra from a Vegas stripper on cocaine; you know what we are in for – a figurative, pumped up, chronological look down memory lane, celebrating and recreating the Las Vegas acts of the 1940s to the1980s.

As valentines go, this jazzy, hot potpourri of old-style Vegas acts grabs you by the memories and shakes you into a sin-city stupor that manages to find a lot of heart inside its exaggerated sentimentalism. Yes, the show could use some snazzier dialogue, and there are times you may wish for precise impersonations of Vegas stars versus re-enactments, but the stage is packed with astounding Broadway-caliber talent and the sheer joy on display will make you wonder why you spent twice as much on some heartless spectacle across the Strip.

August 9th, 2010 • 4:52 pm - Weekly $100,000 bet to prove that The Strip isn't all Cirque

Las Vegas Weekly

It’s the most ambitious production David Saxe has taken on in 23 years since he began co-producing his sister Melinda’s magic show while he was still in high school at age 17. He has a cast and crew of more than 70, including 11 musicians, for his new Vegas! The Show at his Saxe Theater in Planet Hollywood’s Miracle Mile. The Las Vegas-born producer signed the lease of the former Steve Wyrick Theater on April 1, and it’s no joke.

“Up until that point, the show existed only in my head. I always saw it as a big production, and I decided to go all in, even though it’s a $100,000 gamble every week. We had over $1 million risked before our gala opening.

August 6, 2010 - Saxe shows punching power as ambitious 'Vegas! The Show' bows at Miracle Mile

LAS VEGAS SUN
By John Katsilometes

When they know they are in firm control of a fight, great boxers sometimes drop their gloves and jut their chins.

It's a dare. "Come at me," is the message. "Hit me with your best shot," as Pat Benatar once said.

Muhammad Ali was known to do this. Sugar Ray Leonard, too. And when the opponent seized the opportunity to land a blow against a seemingly defenseless fighter, his punch usually fell inches short. The opponent was too quick to be hit, deftly evading the blow and firing back with a shot of his own. Whack!

"Vegas! The Show," is playing inside the new Saxe Theatre in the Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood. This is a musical extravaganza that pays tribute to all of the entertainment that made Las Vegas great. It is a talent driven production that features incredible singers, dancers, performers, and musicians. It is a wonderful show for anyone with a love for Las Vegas entertainment.

When it comes to doing a show about the shows of Las Vegas, there is such a wealth of material that the biggest problem is trying to decide what not to put in. I was fortunate enough to be a part of the initial process of trying to make sense of this abundant material, and it was hard. There is no way to do justice to every aspect of Vegas entertainment in ninety minutes, and everyone will have a different opinion as to what is important...and every choice you do make will mean eliminating something else. I am sure that struggle is still going on.

August 2nd, 2010 • 4:21 pm - From Boy Band Stardom to Vegas! The Show: The D-Low(e) on Sin City's Newest Star

Vegas Chatter

Here at VegasChatter we are very excited about Thursday. Because it’s nearly the weekend? No. Because ladies drink free at Rock House? Not even. Thursday, ladies and gents, is the official opening of Vegas! The Show. And that means the official unveiling of our new favorite Vegas performer, Tom Lowe.

We first noticed the Lowe when we attended the dress rehearsal for VTS and couldn’t help noticing that as well as being English, he was rather well endowed with the whole singing skillz + charisma package. The proof: six weeks on, we still remember which Vegas characters he took off (Elvis, Frank, Elton and Tom Jones FYI) but the others are something of a blur. When even our friend who hearts Buble but (inexplicably) doesn’t dig Matt Goss (yes we’re still friends – we are nothing if not indulgent) gave him her seal of approval, we knew the Saxe Theater is in possession of something special. July 29 to August 11, 2010 - Vegas Seven - BEST THEATER PRODUCER

His father was a Vegas bandleader, his mother a showgirl and his sister a Vegas magician. David Saxe is Old Vegas enter- tainment down to his toes. But his business is pure New Vegas, where shows must make money. He keeps the vaudeville/Vegas tradition alive with showgirls and jugglers and musicians by operating two theaters in the Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Holly- wood. His marquee show collects a variety of variety acts, and the other show pays tribute to the city as Vegas: The Show. But in addition to his own shows, the Saxe venues keep the dream of the independent Vegas producer alive. And his stages are for rent if you have a show, a dream and can pass the Saxe audition for a show likely to please a Vegas audience.

July 18, 2010 - Singer feels love for Vegas

By MIKE WEATHERFORD
LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

Reva Rice appreciates the irony. She's singing in the new "Vegas! The Show," which celebrates the good old days. But she was there for the birth of the new Vegas.

Rice was straight from Broadway when she opened "Starlight Express" at the Las Vegas Hilton in 1993. The show ran four years but is more or less forgotten now. Cirque du Soleil's "Mystere" opened at almost the same time, and it's considered the watershed point when Vegas entertainment switched from past to present.

June 26th, 2010 • 1:55 am - Lopez, Santa Fe keep that big-band groove alive on and off the Strip

Las Vegas Sun

I’ve often been accused of petty theft … I mean, I have often been accused of giving an inordinate amount of attention to Santa Fe & Fat City Horns. But the band, most notably front man Jerry Lopez, is always centered in a convergence of three things I love: Old Vegas, great live music and cool venues.

A dynamite guitarist and vocalist, Lopez is sharing the band-leading assignment with former Danny Gans music director Pat Caddick in the throwback variety production, “Vegas! The Show” which finally opens tonight at Saxe Theater at Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood.

Lopez calls the 11-piece ensemble, “a band-estra,” too big for a regular band, not quite an orchestra. A real ’tweener.

June 26th, 2010 • 5:48 pm - A sneak peek at 'Vegas! The Show'

Las Vegas Weekly

Fans of Las Vegas lore and theater alike will soon have a new show to enjoy. David Saxe’s Vegas retrospective, Vegas! The Show is set to open Saturday night, ready or not. Friday’s dress rehearsal showed there are still plenty of kinks to work out, but of course that is what run-throughs are for.

Most of the issues seemed to be technical, as the singers and dancers appeared well rehearsed and suffering no shortage of talent. On opening night, patrons will see several familiar faces, and legs, from various other Strip productions including Peepshow. The caliber of singing and dancing bodes well for the future of the show.

Probably a coincidence, but the band rehearsing onstage does play the Rat Pack anthem "Ain't That a Kick in the Head" just as David Saxe escorts visitors across the stage to take a mindful seat in the audience.

June 15th, 2010 • 7:06 am - Summer sizzles with hot new ‘Show’

David Saxe has just announced his newest creation. "Vegas! The Show" will open at the new Saxe Theater in the Miracle Mile at Planet Hollywood on June 18 (Friday). This is reported to be the largest production to hit the Las Vegas Strip in the last 20 years.

Yes, Las Vegas has big production shows … "Cirque," "Cirque," "Cirque," "Phantom," "Jersey Boys" and "The Lion King," to name a few. But David Saxe is bringing Las Vegas something fresh.

"The Show" will feature 40 performers, a full orchestra and, of course, fabulous Las Vegas showgirls. Sounds like a musical tour of Las Vegas history, when the lounge acts introduced the audiences to super stars of the time.

The extravagant production cost $30 million, plus the Saxe Theater was designed so that every seat provides an exceptional view of the stage and offers the audience the latest in cutting edge theatrical equipment.

Las Vegas Weekly

In retrospect, it would have helped if the Surinamese audience knew what a celebrity impressionist is.

Instead, the 1,500 or so fans in the antiquated Anthony Neste Stadium in Paramaribo, Suriname, did not readily know of this art form. They paid to see Toni Braxton. The real Toni Braxton. Miss Un-Break My Heart herself.

A tribute act? Most Surinamese music fans had never witnessed such a thing.

Therein began a legal odyssey that landed the unwitting Trina Johnson-Finn, who was to perform that tribute to Braxton, in a Surinamese jail for 104 days.

Vegas! The Show Looks Like It Has Potential

UPDATE: Video alert! Here's David Saxe and a man called Tiger talking about the show on 8 News Now this morning. Exciting! And they confirmed that it does indeed start June 18.

Last time we were over at the new Saxe Theater in Miracle Mile, we were assured that the new show – Vegas! The Show – would be opening this weekend. Now we’re not so sure, as Vegas.com is only selling tickets from 18 June.

Either way, from the looks of the sparkly logo (rhinestones, baby!) and the new ad we spied on this taxi, we think we might like it. It looks camp, it looks fabulous, we just hope it’s done with enough of a sense of humor to carry it off, what with the rat pack and the Elvis impersonators and the showgirls.

April 20, 2010 • 8:03 pm - David Saxe finally takes over the theater 'built for him' at Miracle Mile Shops

Las Vegas Sun

Err and refer to the showroom as Wyrick Theatre, and David Saxe stops you and says, "I think I just threw up in my mouth a little."

The theater in question is now called Saxe Theater, and it is to open June 1 with a new show called "Vegas! The Show." The Wyrick in question is illusionist Steve Wyrick, the man whose greatest feat of magic might have been to entice investors to finance a $34 million theater build-out at what was at the time Desert Passage Mall at the Aladdin. But Wyrick's far-flung venture to assemble an empire of productions, with his own as the centerpiece, cratered in December when he vacated the 435-seat theater he leased from Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood.

April 8th, 2010 - Saxe adds theater at Miracle Mile Shops

Las Vegas Review-Journal
By MIKE WEATHERFORD

A venue that once competed with producer David Saxe's V Theater will soon carry his name at the Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood.

The Saxe Theater will be the new name for the 435-seater formerly operated by magician Steve Wyrick, who surrendered it to the mall in a December foreclosure. Saxe will now oversee both venues, and hopes to have the new venue up and running by June 1.

Saxe has "a very proven track record with us with the V Theater," says Russ Joyner, the mall's general manager. "While we had a lot of considerations to go through, at the end of the day the right person to do this was right in our backyard."

While the twin operation offers economies of scale, Saxe says few ticket buyers should pick up on the mutual ownership. "The game plan is for it to have its own identity, its own shows, marketed separately."
